A ketogenic diet or “keto” as you may hear it called, is a catch all nickname for anything pertaining to the metabolic state of ketosis, the burning of ketones, or the dietary macronutrient composition that promotes this metabolic state. Ketones are a source of energy in the body that are used by the brain, heart, and muscles in the same manner as glucose (sugar). They are produced in the liver as a by-product of burning fat for fuel. By comparison to the Standard American Diet, the modern ketogenic diet is very high in natural nutritious fats, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates.
HOW DO KETOGENIC DIETS WORK?
When carbohydrates (sugar and starch) are eaten, they are broken down into glucose in the body. A higher carbohydrate consumption results in higher blood sugars which means more work for the nasty hormone that stores carbs as fat for later use. If you replace those carbs with a higher fat and moderate protein intake, it will result in the mitochondria of the cell switching from carb burning or sugar burning to fat burning for it’s primary source of fuel. As fat is burned, some of it is converted into ketones in the liver. As blood glucose levels drop and ketones rise, your body uses the available fatty acids as an energy source.
